Scaling Hotelgatuno: Implementing a New Transfer Service

The Challenge

As the hotelgatuno project grows, managing guest logistics became a bottleneck. Our team identified the need for a dedicated transfer service to streamline arrivals and departures, ensuring a seamless experience for guests from the moment they step off their transport.

The Approach

To integrate this feature effectively, we focused on modularizing our service layer. By decoupling the transfer logic from the core booking engine, we ensure better maintainability and testability.

Designing the Service Layer

We implemented a service-oriented pattern to handle transfer requests. This allows us to scale independently without impacting existing reservation workflows.

// Example: Transfer Service Module
export const createTransfer = async (bookingId, details) => {
  const { pickupTime, driverNotes } = details;

  // Logic to interact with database or cache
  return await db.transfers.create({
    data: { bookingId, pickupTime, driverNotes, status: 'pending' }
  });
};

Leveraging Modern Infrastructure

Given our stack—which utilizes React for the UI and Supabase for backend data storage—we opted for a serverless-friendly approach. Using Vercel as our deployment platform allows us to trigger these transfer updates globally while keeping latency low for regional users.

Implementation Strategy

  1. Data Modeling: We added a new schema for transfers in our persistence layer to track pickup locations and transit requirements.
  2. UI Integration: Using Tailwind CSS, we crafted a responsive interface that allows users to request transfers directly from their account dashboard.
  3. Event Handling: We ensured that all status changes are captured, allowing for real-time updates through our existing event-driven architecture.

Key Insight

By treating the transfer service as a first-class citizen in our architecture rather than a simple database flag, we've enabled future extensibility—such as integrating third-party logistics APIs in the coming months.
