Standardizing Image Layouts in Hotelgatuno
The Problem
In our React-based project, hotelgatuno, we noticed that visual inconsistency was creeping into our UI components. Specifically, images displayed across the application were suffering from fluctuating heights. This lack of a standardized height caused layout shifts and made the user interface feel unpolished as images of varying aspect ratios disrupted the flow of our grids.
The Approach
To address this, we implemented a consistent CSS strategy for our image containers. By shifting away from intrinsic, dynamic sizing to a fixed-height constraint, we gained control over the document flow.
Implementing Fixed Constraints
We moved toward a utility-first approach to ensure that every image component respects a standard height regardless of the source file resolution:
.image-container {
height: 250px;
width: 100%;
overflow: hidden;
}
.image-container img {
object-fit: cover;
height: 100%;
width: 100%;
}
By setting object-fit: cover, we ensure that the image fills the fixed-height container while maintaining its aspect ratio, effectively cropping excess areas rather than stretching or distorting the content.
Key Insight
UI stability is often about preventing layout movement. Defining explicit bounds for media assets before the browser finishes rendering them prevents the content "jumping" that frequently occurs during component hydration in React applications.
